How to Store and Maintain Lithium Batteries in Winter or Cold Weather

Cold weather often raises concerns for riders of electric bikes and electric scooters, especially when it comes to lithium battery performance and lifespan. While low temperatures can temporarily affect battery efficiency, proper storage and handling during winter can effectively prevent long-term damage.

Before storing your battery, always make sure the main power switch is set to the middle (OFF) position. This helps avoid unnecessary power loss during long periods of inactivity and reduces the risk of deep discharge.

For storage conditions, lithium batteries should ideally be kept in a dry, well-ventilated environment with temperatures between –20°C and +25°C (–4°F to 77°F). Short exposure to cold weather is generally not an issue, but prolonged freezing conditions should be avoided whenever possible. Indoor storage is always recommended for winter, especially for electric bicycles and scooters that are not used daily.

Battery charge level is equally important. Before storage, the battery should be charged to around 40–60%, which corresponds to approximately 3.7–3.9V per cell. Storing a battery fully charged or fully depleted can accelerate natural aging and reduce overall capacity over time, particularly in low-temperature environments.

If a lithium battery remains unused in cold conditions for up to two months, this will not cause permanent damage. However, charging the battery while it is still cold should be avoided. Lithium batteries must first warm up naturally before being connected to a charger.

When you plan to use the battery again, allow it to return to a temperature of around 15–20°C (59–68°F). Once it reaches this range, normal charging and use can resume safely.

Following these storage and winter maintenance practices helps maintain stable performance and extends the lifespan of lithium batteries used in electric bikes and electric scooters. At Afreda, we use high-quality lithium cells designed for long charge-discharge cycles and reliable performance across a wide temperature range, giving riders added peace of mind during winter storage and everyday use.

Proper winter care does not require complicated steps, but it does make a meaningful difference. With correct storage and handling, your battery will remain safe, reliable, and ready when riding season returns.
